CANCELLED ~ Blended Learning for Active Learners
Matthew Joseph, Executive Director of Teaching +Learning, Providence Public Schools

Level: Intermediate
Grades: All
Cost: $65
Explore strategies to support instruction that leads to active learners. One of the keys to academic achievement is active learning. According to research - personalized, collaborative, and connected learning experiences enhance student engagement, which in turn drives student success. By integrating blended and digital learning into the classroom, educators can take learning experiences to the next level and improve student performance. In its basic and simplest definition, blended learning is an instructional methodology. It is a teaching and learning approach that combines face-to-face classroom methods with digital created activities to deliver instruction. A classroom that nurtures creativity often results in students taking different approaches to interact with the same curriculum. Computers do not teach, Apps do not teach, TEACHERS teach. Digital learning is an instructional strategy that enhances learning and engages learners. It is important to know what tools we have and what they're capable of providing to enhance student learning. Focus on blended learning tools that can increase engagement that educators can use for instruction. This workshop is offered in the BYOD format only.

The objective of the MakerStudio is to provide children the freedom of innovative experimentation and exploration. The MakerStudio allows students to learn to be creative in their expression of thoughts and ideas. How do we help children accomplish this objective? We create a space that has the materials, tools and the appropriate space to spread out and work alone or collaboratively with others. The end product is either a new creation or a representation of an idea. The challenge for any educator is time. How did I fit it all in? Students from North Reading High School will explain and demonstrate how they used the design thinking process to approach challenges, interpret learning, identify creative opportunities and experiment mindfully to iterate design solutions. This will include the students self-identified process as students worked through to design a "Stair Climbing Robot" and "Designing Games Using The Unity Game Engine". Students will describe the important mechanical and programming principles that moved them in the direction of being able to design and construct their own projects, ie., personalized learning and learning connected to their own interests. How does robotics in the classroom support college and career readiness? This project shows the culmination of an idea that inspired students to create a stair climbing robot. The demands of e-commerce shoppers are pushing retailers to compete for speedier delivery, which is driving up costs to hire drivers and buy and maintain vehicles while creating more traffic on busy city streets. Students are proposing a stair climbing robot which can deliver food, medicine, etc., without taking up space and is environmentally friendly. Also shown will be students using the Unity Game Engine. These students will demonstrate an original video game idea implementation, preparing them with job skills for real world careers.

Awesome Apps to Close the Gaps - Finding & Using Effective Educational Apps
Libby Curran, Reading Specialist, Newport Montessori School
*
Level: Beginner
Grades: Pre-K, K-5, ELL, SPED

With its ease of access, low cost, multi-sensory, customizable apps for every possible interest and subject area, and undeniable "cool" factor, the iPad is potentially the most powerful educational tool yet invented. But sifting through thousands of apps in the App Store can be a daunting task. Have you ever been overwhelmed by the vast number of apps on the App Store and on app review sites? Have you ever been disappointed after downloading what seemed to be a promising educational app? I know I have. Over the years, I've downloaded and tried over 1,000 apps but only a tiny fraction of these remain on my iPads to be used by my students on a regular basis. This workshop will demonstrate how to find, evaluate and use exceptional apps that have been field tested over time in classrooms with children of all abilities: educational apps that truly promote creativity and thinking skills, learning, accessibility, collaboration, engagement and depth of knowledge. This will be a hands-on session where participants will learn about the most effective reading, writing and math apps for PreK-3rd Grade, Special Needs and ELL students.
